Well, then! It has been quite the interesting last full day in Portland before the BluePass travels start. For one, the incredible story of the rebellion in Libya has had me glued to CNN, Twitter, and Al Jazeera English on the web. And, the news came out that Tropical Storm Irene is forecast to run right into the Dominican Republic tomorrow (Monday) and/or Tuesday. Remember, my flight down to Santiago in the DR is scheduled to land around 8:40 PM on Tuesday.
So for now, it looks like I might barely miss the storm, but that could change. JetBlue has already issued a travel waiver for all flights to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic through Tuesday. So, even if I couldn't change my flight for free because of the BluePass terms, I now would have that ability. Still, I'm going to stick with the plan for now, after talking with Ryan. We shall see how it all works out! I have pretty unbelievable luck with not missing flights or having them cancelled, but perhaps that luck will run out soon. JetBlue has already been canceling flights to Puerto Rico all day. I'll be carefully monitoring the situation tomorrow, to be sure.
Other news from Trip #1: I bought the Red Sox tickets to go with Max on August 31st! Actually not too bad of a price ($100 each, including the reseller fees from StubHub) for outfield seats about 15 rows behind the bullpen. It should give us a great view of the whole park. I now have confirmed tickets to all the events I planned for the first trip.
Also, Erin is coming with me to the Timbers/DC United game on August 27! That will be fun as well. Hard to believe that is in less than a week, because I'm so focused on the Dominican Republic aspect to the trip so far!
The last major unconfirmed item from the trip is the NYC lodging on August 29 and 30, while I'm at the US Open. If the original plans fall through, I think the best option will be to book a cheap place on airbnb.com - a great site that Ryan told me about where people basically rent out extra rooms in their house for a little extra cash. Tons of good options. It makes me feel better about not having to spend a ton on a hotel, or sleep the night in an airport.
Tomorrow the packing will end, and I'll be flying off at 11:35 PM PST from Portland to Boston! I'll try to post updates here when I can, but for real time posts from me, please follow me on Twitter @LukeFritz64.
